10 fun Harmony Week activities for kids

Every year, Australia celebrates Harmony Week - a time of cultural respect for all and a sense of belonging. This year we are celebrating from March 21st, and the theme of Harmony Week is “Everyone belongs”. This week is devoted to promoting cultural diversity and inclusion in all its forms. For all Australians - from traditional custodians to people immigrating from countries all over the world. To help you and your kids celebrate this special occasion, we’ve compiled a list of 10 fun Harmony Week activities that are sure to be a hit with the whole family!

1. Have a cooking party

Get the family and friends together for a cooking party where each person prepares a dish from their own culture or heritage. It’s an excellent way to share knowledge and experiences while trying new foods.

2. Watch a movie about diversity

Take time to watch a movie together as a family that celebrates different cultures or teaches lessons about inclusion. Movies like “Moana” or “Coco” are great choices.

3. Visit your local library

Libraries often have books, music, and other materials from different cultures that can help you learn more about the world around you. It’s also a great place to find more ideas for activities during Harmony Week.

4. Create art together

Get creative together by making something inspired by your culture or heritage like masks, jewellery, paintings, sculptures—the possibilities are endless! It’s always nice to create something tangible out of our shared experiences.

5. Go on an adventure

You don’t have to travel far to explore different cultures—there may be places in your own city where you can experience unique traditions and customs firsthand. For instance, visit your local international market or attend an event at your local cultural centre.

6. Play traditional games

Many cultures have their own unique games that have been passed down over generations—why not try one? Whether it’s playing dominoes with friends from another country or learning how to play mancala from someone from Africa, there are endless ways to make lasting memories while having fun together.

7. Learn some new phrases

Learning new languages is always exciting—but why not start small? Learn how to say hello in different languages and practise with people who speak them natively so you can get some real-life experience too.

8. Celebrate other holidays

Take the time during Harmony Week (or any other time!) to appreciate holidays celebrated by cultures other than your own—it’s an excellent way to build bridges between people and honour the differences that make us all unique individuals.

9. Make multicultural crafts

Gather up some supplies and get crafty by making paper dolls representing various ethnicities, nationalities, religions, etc., then display them proudly in your home as reminders of our shared humanity (just be sure not to use culturally insensitive symbols).

10. Tell stories about diversity

Storytelling is an excellent way for kids (and adults!) To learn more about others in addition to ourselves—so why not tell stories about individuals who come from diverse backgrounds? They don't have to be factual; they just need to promote understanding between peoples of all walks of life.

There are many ways we can celebrate Harmony Week this year (and every year!). From visiting libraries and international markets on our adventures abroad or creating crafts at home with our families—it doesn't matter what activities we choose so long as they promote acceptance, understanding, and appreciation for everyone's individual differences. So let's get out there this Harmony Week and celebrate!
